Titles such as Superhot VR and Arizona Sunshine played as intended with minimal lag or buffering. Just as is the case with the Meta Quest 2, it's incredibly simple to play games from your PC using the Meta Quest 3, which I did wirelessly through a third-party app called Virtual Desktop. I think this comes down to the Meta Quest 3's LCD display, which doesn’t have anywhere near as many vibrant colours or truer blacks as the OLED panels on the PSVR 2.Ĭameras: external dual 4-megapixel RGB camerasĬompatibility: standalone, can be connected to PC via Meta Link cable or wirelessly through third-party apps The new eye panels boast a higher resolution than both the Meta Quest 2 and the PSVR 2 but still aren't on par with Sony's headset. Pair this with the new depth sensor and the VR headset is able to scan the room around you and utilise your surroundings in-game. One of the more noticeable Meta Quest 3 features you’ll encounter as you take the headset out of the box is the fact that it comes equipped with external 4MP RGB cameras to allow for seamless passthrough and augmented reality ( AR) experiences. This feature is much more intuitive and you'll wonder why it's only being added three iterations down the line. I found this to be a significant quality-of-life change considering the laborious process of removing the Meta Quest 2 to constantly adjust it. There is one nice upgrade on the Meta Quest 3, and that's a small scroll wheel on the headset to adjust the distance of the lenses from your face while you’re wearing the goggles. You also get a power button and volume button on the headset. You’ll find that the Meta Quest 3 has a USB-C port on the side of the headset which is used for charging as well as for utilising a Meta Link cable so you can play games from your PC. The weight has always been one of the main drawbacks of the Meta Quest 2 for me, so of course, I was expecting something more lightweight with the Meta Quest 3 – but those 20g just don't make enough of discernible difference, which is extremely disappointing. However, despite the headset definitely being slimmer, I found it practically the same weight with a paltry 20g shaved off between the two models the Meta Quest 3 weighs in at 525g compared to the Meta Quest 2's 545g. Something Meta consistently stated in its Meta Connect 2023 showcase and the promotional trailer for the Meta Quest 3 was that the Meta Quest 3 is 40% slimmer than the Meta Quest 2. That said, you can get your hands on the Meta Quest 3 Elite Strap, which adds a halo-like attachment to the top of your headset and distributes the weight similar to the PSVR 2. This means that it does put a fair amount of pressure on your face when wearing it, particularly if you haven’t adjusted the straps correctly. In terms of build, the Meta Quest 3 is a wholly front-loaded VR headset, with all of the components contained in the goggles. This material keeps it lightweight and the strap is relatively breathable. The Meta Quest 3 design is very similar to its predecessor, coming in a smooth white plastic finish for the goggles and a white fabric Y-strap for support. Pair that with the price of the PS5 – which costs £479.99 / $499.99 / AU$799.95 – and you're spending over a grand without even taking games into account. In comparison, the PSVR 2 headset comes in at a hefty £529.99 / $549.99 / AU$879.95.
